Regina Mbugua: Kenyan missionary to the Giriama people of Kenya

Fresh out of university, I decided to “give one year to God” as a missionary. Although I’ve been a Christian since I was 14, I did not know there are people who have never heard the gospel.

As a Kikuyu living among the Giriama for three months now, my worldview has changed. There are people living and dying without Christ. It’s urgent and important for me to be spreading the gospel right now. God has given all Christians a huge mandate to share his love with the unreached.

I heard about iServe Africa from a friend at the university. She spoke fondly of serving God, and her life as a minister inspired me. She encouraged me to apply to iServe Africa, and after graduation, I applied and was accepted.

iServe Africa focuses on revival and evangelism. We spread the gospel, help needy families and provides scholarship programs as we continue to disciple them.

This organization sent me to work with the Swahili Coast Mission among the Giriama people. Swahili Coast Mission partners with Christ Formation Church (CFC). I’m a translator for the non-Swahili speaking missionaries. Together with the evangelism team, we go out for door-to-door evangelism and speak to Muslims about the gospel.

I especially love the children’s ministry, as we impart the Bible teachings to them from a young age. It’s wonderful to see the young Muslim kids get interested in the gospel. They are allowed by their parents to attend the Bible studies, and we hope they remain for a long time and come to know God for themselves.

Our goal is for the Giriama people to fully understand the gospel, begin their own local churches, and eventually reach their own people in their own language.

All young people need to know there’s a calling beyond making money after getting an education: we have all been called to live as missionaries. It’s our obligation to make Christ known to the ends of the earth.

For me to be faithful to the scriptures and point everyone back to God.
For me to be courageous in spreading this gospel.
For the children and the people we’re reaching, that they will hear God calling them to be his people.
