Missionary profile – Pastor PE Phoseka

Pastor PE Phoseka
Missionary from South Africa to Mozambique and Lesotho
I’m a missionary working among the Basotho people group in Lesotho. My church sent me and we have been here since last year.
Thirty years ago in primary school, I made the decision to accept Christ as Lord and Saviour. That decision has ruled my life and guided me to where I am today. As the lastborn in a family of four, it was a miracle that I went to school. My dad died when I was six years old, and my elder brother ensured that I got an education.
After becoming a Christian, I served in my local church and joined the Student Christian Movement in high school. It was a wonderful time serving the Lord among the students.
At the end of my high school education, I felt the desire to serve the Lord more. But I also desired to serve my family. One of the hardest decisions I ever made was to go to Union Bible Institute in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, in 1997. In my second year, I took a mission course. We learned about the Great Commission and pioneer missionaries who went to China to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. I felt the Lord leading me to missions.
I graduated in 1999, fell in love with my sweetheart Fikile, and the following year, 29 July 2000, we got married.
Then a missionary from the missions agency TEAM organized a trip to Mozambique. After that, I felt the Lord leading me to Mozambique, but Mozambique is a lusophone country, i.e. Portuguese speaking. It was going to be difficult to stay with my kids in Mozambique because of school, but God pushed me to go.
My church was not ready to help those serving on the mission field at that time. I didn’t have financial support and that was a huge challenge. But we went anyway. In 2006, we began to work in Mozambique with a community church. In 2009 I returned to work with my church. In the same year, we planted a local church among the Shangane people.
The Bible says, “Freely ye have received; freely give” (Matt. 10:8). John 17:18 says, “Just as you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.” As we have received the word from the Lord freely, we are commanded to give as well.
- For God’s help to finish His mission. It’s easy to start a project, but finishing can be very difficult.
- For my daughter who is going to the university this year.
