Missionary profile – Georgina Takundwa

Georgina Takundwa

A missionary from Zimbabwe to the Somali nation

My heart is for the unreached nation of the Somalis. I have lived among least reached communities in many places.   My focus has been on Somali communities, wherever they are—from Zambia to Djibouti to communities in Cape Town and Jo-burg, SA.

On one of my mission trips, we travelled by bus from Harare in Zimbabwe to Mombasa, Nairobi and then further north.  It took us a week on this trip on the road. The mission seed had been planted in my heart a few years earlier, and I reached Somali communities wherever they were.

I’m now working with Operation Mobilization (OM) as a People Care Officer in Zimbabwe. I take care of all the details needed for a missionary to go and thrive in the mission field. I focus on the spiritual, mental and physical well-being of the missionaries. I also train pastors on how to care for missionaries.

Growing up as an Anglican, our parents encouraged us to be constant in church attendance, although I didn’t understand salvation. A preacher in high school asked me if I understood salvation, and I was shocked to know that despite all my church attendance, I wasn’t a Christian. I got born again at 18 after finishing high school.

I enrolled to study Agriculture in college. A worker from Open Doors came and shared the need for Christian workers in North Africa. He said he spoke to the agriculture students because they were instrumental in reaching the agro-nomadic people in the north of Africa.

This call became personal for me; I had been struggling with deciding what I wanted to do after university, and this sounded perfect. I decided to give it a go. After listening to an exposition of the book of Acts on the need for us to be involved in the Great Commission, it became more evident that I wanted to serve God.

Serving among the Somalis is challenging and can be hard. But I came to know God as Jehovah El Gibbor—mighty God—and this became my mantra. Whenever I stepped outside my gate to go out and spread the gospel, I told myself, “The Lord is mighty; I have a champion, my shield, and my buckler.” I gained courage.

I recently moved back to Zimbabwe and rejoined Operation Mobilisation (OM). The Church in Africa needs to embrace the mandate of the Great Commission; it’s time for us (the Global South) to support missions and to be the sending Church.

#Pray:

  • For my mission; I desire to be back on the mission field but I need to raise enough funds to go again.
  • For my current involvement in the well-being of missionaries, that I will be used to refresh them and make going to the field more manageable and more comfortable.
  • For the Somali nation to be drawn to God and be reached with the gospel.
