Missionary profile – E from Rwanda
By Mercy Kambura
Growing up a Catholic, I was fluent in Catholicism and religion. Born in Kigali, Rwanda, as one of four kids, our life was standard as my parents encouraged us to pray and be involved in God’s things. I became adept at saying the rosary, and my Hail Marys were impeccable. Today, the only language I’m fluent in is cross-cultural missions. I studied Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness at a University in Rwanda. In 2012, having left Catholicism, I attended a service at Zion Temple in Huye, Rwanda. The pastor expounded on salvation, and I understood the meaning of being born again for the first time. I believed and joined a discipleship group for growth. I first heard of unreached people groups at the university Christian Union meeting. We used to have time to pray for the unreached. However, God’s agenda for the nations and my role in it became clear when I did the Kairos course in 2013.
In 2018 my friend and I were sent by Generation 12 to reach out to unreached people in a remote part of a neighbouring country. We obeyed the call, and now live among them, preaching the Gospel as we serve the community. My lowest moment is when we’re overlooked by other people just because we’re single ladies. We present the Gospel to the younger generation with the resources God has provided. We’re now helping even the neighbouring villages. Philippians 2:5-8 asks us to have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. 1 John 3:16 asks us to lay down our lives for others just as Christ did. If we, as the African Church, truly love Christ and confess to being His followers, then as He laid down His life for us, so should we also lay ours down for those who are dying without knowing Him.
#Pray:
- For the unreached people group we’re reaching, for God to stir their hearts to seek the truth and meet Jesus, who is the way, truth, and life.
- For the community to be set free from many things that bind them, such as witchcraft.
- For the children we’re teaching to be transformed by God and be the lights in their families.
- For us to have more grace and wisdom as we reach out.
