“God’s amazing provision” – a missionary moment

For some years, I was working among Somali refugees, and used an office on our church compound to train ladies in tailoring skills while building friendship and sharing God’s love. At one point, my support was so low that I got nine months behind on the rent for the space, payable to the church, and they sent me a letter demanding that I pay the full amount within one week.

I felt so discouraged and upset, and said to God, while holding the rent demand letter in my hands: “God, I didn’t call myself to this work, you called me. So if I get ashamed, it’s you who’s getting the shame, not me. If you’re ready for the shame … fine with me. As for myself, I will continue doing what brought me here.” With those angry words, I shelved the letter and continued with my work for the day.

That same day, another church called asking me to help disciple a new convert from Islam, who shared some terrible stories of being thrown out of her home and having no food after converting to Christianity. We called a brother at an organization that helps such people, and went to see him. At his office, he gave some money to help, then looked at me and asked what was wrong with me. I was surprised because I hadn’t said anything about my problem, but I shared it with him. He said, “Come next week to pick up the check.” This was a miracle – that bill was huge!

How amazing that God used this other situation to bring me in contact with this person I rarely saw, who gave the help I needed. In those moments in lif e when you don’t know how to pray, he’s always very present and faithful to help. God’s call in our lives is his responsibility to keep us, hence the saying, “Where there’s a vision, there’s provision.” I have seen God come through for me in many miraculous ways that have always affirmed my calling and encouraged me to continue. Otherwise, I would have given up long ago! Being an African missionary is not easy because support-raising is still a challenge. It is always a journey of faith.
