“Carrying garbage for the gospel” – a missionary moment

Our short-term team from Ghana set out to do evangelism in the enormous slums of Kibera, Nairobi, and came across a group of people cleaning up rubbish near their homes. We tried to engage with them, but they paid no attention and tried to avoid us. One of our young men, Ralph, had a thought about Paul’s message of becoming all things to all men in order to win some. He approached one of the men who was standing by some rubbish they had gathered into a basket, and offered to help dispose of it. The man gladly welcomed the offer.

Ralph carried the basket of slimy rubbish on his head with the water dripping on his shirt. On his return from disposing it, even those who had been sitting afar came close to hear what he had to say. One of them asked Ralph why he did what he did. Ralph introduced himself, and shared with them how important it was to show kindness to our neighbours. He told them about God’s love for us irrespective of what we’ve done, and how Jesus came to die to save us from our sins.
