“A freezing wind” – a misssionary moment
We went out to Northern Kenya to do missions training, and traveled to another place to do outreach. We spent the whole day in a very windy location, going door to door all over the village, climbing up and down and around in that weather.
As evening approached, we set up the equipment to show the Jesus film but it started to become too windy. The equipment fell over once, twice, three times, but we didn’t think we should cancel because we had spent the whole day telling people to come and see it. We had told them that Jesus would be speaking their language, so they came in large numbers and had walked long distances in that bad weather just to attend.
We could not get the equipment to stay up in that wind, so finally we decided we would hold on to the poles that held the screen. It was so windy and bitter cold, and we struggled to hold on through almost 2 hours. That movie felt like the longest that had ever been shown! Finally
one of our number was too exhausted and fell down. But we felt we must go on, even though we had walked the whole day.
One of the villagers who had been taking us around during the day was urging us not to quit, saying, “Guys, people have come!” He was giving us a pep talk on why we should continue.
We persevered, and at the end of the film, 20 people gave their lives to Christ! The next day people were telling stories around the village about the movie and how Jesus had been speaking their language. And they kept talking about “those people held the screen the whole time!” and were amazed.
That experience makes it to the top of the list of remarkable moments I’ve experienced so far.
